Concept
Vardø ReBaked is a research and conceptual project with focus on Vardø bakeries as historical and potential catalysts for public life. The project aims to uncover the potential of the bakeries to narrate Vardø history and to recover its role as catalysts for public life in the contemporary context.
The bakeries in Vardø hold collective memory and history. They represent the flourishing years of the Pomor Trade (1850-1917) when permanent bakeries using grain from Russia; seasonal bakeries supplying fishermen who came from all over Norway and collective ovens with Finish origin.
During the 60s & 70s, with the blooming of the fishing industry, the bakeries network spread out to feed an increasing population. Nowadays, Vardø is a post-industrial town with outstanding culture and nature, increasing tourism and art activities and a very engaged but shrinking population who is actively searching to revitalize their town.
We envision innovative uses for Vardø traditional bakeries, aiming to open up opportunities for sustainable local businesses that preserve history and offer cultural and recreational experiences for locals and tourists interaction.
